Fundación Espigas and its Documentation Center for the History of Visual Arts in Argentina, founded in 1993, and FIAAR, Fondo para la Investigación del Arte Argentino, created in 1990 and sponsored by Fundación Telefónica, joined forces, since 1997, to carry out an annual award project for research works related to Argentine art through an open and plural contest and its subsequent publication.
The award meant a strong incentive in the publication of specialized studies on the arts, marking some of the predominant lines of the historiography of the local discipline. Abstraction in Argentina (2010), the role of the critic (2008), the art market (2007), art and literature (2006) and art and anthropology (2005) were some of the topics addressed by this line of awards and publishing.
